GRIPS
With a range for every bar type and grip preference Frog has you covered. But which one is right for you?
ELITE VS BASE VS FIBRE WHICH SHOULD I CHOOSE?
While there is a number of factors that might affect your decision, it's important to note the strengths and weaknesses of each material type. To summarise/generalise:
Elite Grips range: Most grippy, stiffer feel initally, maximum durability and hand protection. The Rolls Royce of the Frog range. Disadvantages: Does not perform as well when chalked or exposed to heavily chalked areas, especially speal bars. Note: Elite Grip Lite, same rules apply however much softer/thinner feel and performs better on speal/steel bars.
Base Grips range: Solid grip and the best all rounder performing well on all bar types, rings and with chalk.
Fibre Grips range: The softest Frog Grip, with the most bar feel. Great on steel bars and rings when used with chalk. Will improve the more they are chalked. Not as effective on powder coated bars unless heavily chalked.
HD vs OG what's the difference?
All styles of our grips in the Elite, Base and Fibre come with a HD or an OG option. This is to allow for personal preference.
HD = Wider wrist support and wider hand coverage
OG = Thinner wrist support and more minimalist coverage shaped with the lines of the hand.
The thickness and material is the same based on the name of the grip which reflects it's material
How do I size my grips?
All Grips have a size chart on the product page. However as a general rule here is some options you could consider when buying fingerless grips
Base/Fibre: Possibly a size up or two at max. Sometimes some overhang is useful to help lock in, that being said it does not need to cover or exceed the length of your fingers when you put them on. The excess is just hanging off the bar
Elite Grips: We recommend staying true to size or one size up at max. With the extreme grip on these you do not need the excess to stay locked on if you follow all the preparation instructions. Doing so can put you at risk of getting wrapped around the bar and "grip locked" putting you at risk of potential injury.
Should I go Fingerless or Finger Holes?
This is definitely a personal preference however a couple of starting points you can consider:
Fingerless: If you go thumb over when you grip. Easy to turn around in between workouts when not in use
FingerHoles: If you go thumb around when you grip. Important to remember you don't have to put them all the way down but can be used with finger half way in for an extra fold assisting in grip.
Both can be used thumb over/thumb around but takes some trial and error to find what works for you.
How long do grips last?
This one comes down to a ton of factors and every material will have slightly different wear points and longevity. Some influences can be:
- training volume
- size of the athlete
- grip style
- movements performed
- environmental conditions
- bar types used and condition of your bars
-care of the grips
- sizing.
So as you can imagine life spans can change dramatically.
As a general rule 5 months- 24 months is the optimal range. With the average time to replace being once the surface material has rubbed down over time. And altered the effectiveness of the grip.
Elite Grips: Due to the excessive grip and friction the surface material will eventually wear down revealing the kevlar underneath. Just like tyres on a road. Even with this your grips should still perform well for an extended period of time. When the grip becomes noticeably different it's time to replace. Fraying on the sides is perfectly normal and is simply how kevlar reacts when it's been cut. Always remember to clean your elite grips weekly so they maintain their best grip.
Base & Fibre: Will not have as much friciton on the bar and so less rubbing away initially. However dried chalk and all of the above factors will eventually decay the surface and rub it down. This shouldn't effect the use but will eventually need replacing to ensure durability.
If you believe there's a quality problem with your grips you can shoot through pictures and explanation to help@froggrips.com and the team can assist further
How do I avoid Grip Lock?
Grip lock occurs when the excess length on a fingerless grip gets wrapped around a bar and the athlete gets stuck/locked.
The less grip the less risk there is however there's some key points to consider, especially when first using hyper grippy grips like the Elite range.
1) Sizing the grips correctly as per the chart and if you must up size never going more than one size above. With just enough overhang you remove the risk of wrapping around or into the wrist support.
2) Opening/relaxing the grip when transitioning through movements such as muscle ups. With the grip locking on to the bar so well, if you hold on at the top and continue rep by rep pushing it further over the bar it will eventually get pushed so far over the bar that it will put you at risk of getting locked. Simply open your hand at the top to release the grip from this, before coming down. If you insist on wrapping your thumb with a fingerless grip or doing so during say a ring muscle up, relax/open it in the same fashion. Doing this will also make it a TON more comfortable through the wrist.
3) Always remember to make sure the wrist support is secure enough that you can't pull your hand through it forcefully.
Following these tips will remove most risks and ensure you avoid the dreaded grip lock.
Support Gear
Whether it's performance or protection (or both) we've got the support gear for you! Here's how to choose the best option for you
Which Knee Sleeves should I choose?
We have 4 Main styles of Knee Sleeves, each serving a slightly different purpose. The below descriptions are general guides as everyone has different preferences.
WOD Knee Sleeves: Least compression, offering warmth and protection from movements like burpees, rope climbs and lunges. Ideal for: Lighter lifting and workouts, or for those who don't like excess compression but want a little something for their knees. Sizing: Best to size 1-2 down from your conventional neoprene knee sleeves for extra tightness/compression.
Reversible Knee Sleeves: Mid Level compression, great for lifting to workouts as they won't overcompress the legs but still offer decent support and stability. Ideal for: Those looking to eleviate some knee pain and support knees during workouts, especially those involving external loads. Sizing: True to size via size chart
HD Knee Sleeves: The most extreme compression in the Frog Range, for the heaviest lifts and ultimate knee support. Not ideal for workouts as the compression does create some restriction. Ideal for: Heavy squats, clean and lunges or when your knees need that extra bit support
Sizing: Usually one size up from your conventional knee sleeves. *Note we have recently adjusted our sizing to bring them more in line with the reversible sizes
Overall depending on the level of support you need it's good to have a variety of options for different training pieces. However a lot of it comes down to your own preference. Those with sore knees will lean more towards reversible and HD knee sleeves, while those who don't need/want too much bulk on will find the wod sleeves perfect.
Which Wrist Supports should I choose?
We have three styles of wrist supports. Each with a different feel/target for the wrist.
Wrist Wraps: Great for giving compression and support to the whole wrist joint. Do take some time to wrap/prep but are very easy to adjust by simply twisting one way or the other to tighten or relax.
HD Wrist Supports: A conventional style that comes with a thumb loop to secure and help get on. Uses heavier materials to provide bulk to the wrist protection. Great for heavier lifts such as bench press, overhead squats and front squats.
Elite Wrist Supports: An excellent all rounder for everything from heavier lifts to workouts. Easily adjustable via the velcro and acts like a belt for your wrist, creating a compressive wedge to reduce excessive wrist movement at it's hinge point. Comfy neoprene pad that also helps absorb sweat.
Biggest differences for the wrist support options come from overall bulk on the wrist with HD being most and Wraps being least. Styles of adjustment twist vs velcro. And target surface area of the wrist support itself, Wraps and HD's covering most of the wrist while Elite Wrist Supports tend to focus on the hinge point of the wrist itself.
